Why international talents love Finland

Amidst the discussions surrounding the challenges of living in Finland, it’s equally important to highlight the aspects that make this country not just a good place to live, but an extraordinary one.

We asked the Herizon community to share what resonates with international talents who have chosen to call Finland their home - and why they have grown to love it.

Nature

Clean air and water. the fact that cities are carved into forests and not the other way around.

In Finland, nature is a way of life. The expansive forests, pristine lakes, and tranquil coastal vistas are integral to the daily lives of those here.

For many, these natural wonders provide a constant source of peace and inspiration. One community member eloquently stated, “Nature heals me when I walk or just sit outside.

Finland’s commitment to environmental preservation is a defining feature of life here. Cities are designed to coexist with nature, often feeling like they’re nestled within forests rather than built upon them.

Clean air, pure water, and abundant green spaces aren’t just nice-to-haves. They're central to the Finnish way of life. For many international talents, this harmony with nature is both refreshing and vital to their well-being, reinforcing Finland as a place where one can live in balance with the environment.

Transparency and safety

For females this [safety] can be a really big thing at least I still felt so weird when I was working at night and not afraid of being murdered/raped etc.

Trust and safety form the bedrock of Finnish society. For international talents, the transparency and inclusiveness that permeate everyday life in Finland are key reasons they feel at ease.

“You really don’t get judged based on how you look, and that is really rewarding,” shares one member, reflecting on the welcoming nature of Finnish culture. Here, people are valued for their character and contributions, not their appearances, fostering an environment of respect and security.

Safety, particularly for women, is another cornerstone of life in Finland. The peace of mind that comes from knowing you can walk alone at night without fear is a privilege that many international professionals deeply appreciate and often cite as one of the country’s greatest strengths.

Work-life balance

Work life balance is real. I’m leaving for a cruise a month into the new job, and they say cool! I had a cold, and they say take some days off. I just worked from home, but then I say I gotta do an emergency move, and hr reminds me that’s paid time off.

Finland’s approach to work-life balance is a revelation for many who relocate here. Unlike in other countries where work often takes precedence over personal life, Finland emphasizes a balanced lifestyle where well-being is paramount.

“I was never encouraged to take a vacation or sick days before in my life, but here, it’s different,” notes one community member. This cultural shift is profound, fostering a workplace environment where rest and personal time are respected and seen as essential to sustained productivity.

This respect extends beyond just time off and it’s woven into the fabric of Finnish society. Personal space and communication are deeply valued, offering a unique cultural experience where silence is appreciated, and reflection is encouraged. Over time, this aspect of Finnish life has become increasingly cherished by those who embrace it.

Tradition meets progress

The entire Christmas craze. (I live for Joulupukin Kuuma Linja and a bowl of riisipuuro).

Finnish culture is a captivating mix of deep-rooted traditions and modern innovations.

The Herizon community highlights how cultural elements such as the national love for Christmas, the extensive and accessible library system, and even the embrace of the winter season contribute to a uniquely rich and enjoyable living experience. “Call me weird, but I love a proper winter,” says one member, capturing the sentiment of those who find joy in Finland’s distinct seasonal cycles.

The respect for tradition, combined with a forward-thinking approach to societal well-being, creates a culture that is both rich and progressive. The library system, mentioned by one community member, for instance, is not just a resource hub but a symbol of community and inclusivity, further enriching life in Finland.

Equality and fairness

Raising a child here is affordable and the day care system is fantastic from my experience.

Equality and fairness are not just ideals in Finland but they are lived realities. Whether in the workplace or social interactions, the emphasis on low power dynamics and mutual respect is palpable.

“You get to talk to almost anybody, including your seniors at work and in school, with the same ease you’d talk to your friends,” shares one community member. This egalitarian approach fosters a sense of belonging and breaks down barriers, making Finland a place where people from all walks of life can thrive.

Finland’s strong commitment to gender equality is particularly noteworthy. The freedom to make personal choices without societal pressure is a hallmark of life here, allowing individuals to express themselves authentically and pursue their ambitions without constraint.

Finland is where life flourishes

But still this is way too good compared to some parts of this world.

While no country is without its challenges, the positive aspects of life in Finland are compelling.

For international talents, Finland offers a blend of natural beauty, societal trust, balanced living, environmental consciousness, cultural richness, and egalitarian values. These elements converge to create an environment where people can not only live but truly flourish. Finland isn’t just a place to work or study - it’s a place where life is lived fully.

Through the experiences of the Herizon community, it becomes clear why Finland continues to attract and retain talented individuals from around the world. By focusing on these positive attributes, we can better appreciate what makes Finland special and why so many choose to build their lives here. 💜
