From 3 Years of Job Searching to Success - An International Job Seeker's Journey / part 2

In the previous part of our interview with Shivani, we took a walk through the memory lane and discussed the challenges of finding a position in her own industry.

Now, we'll finish the interview by looking at the present moment, how it's been to transition into working life and what was helpful in this journey in hindsight.

The Internship Experience

How has your internship experience been so far in your field?

So far, my internship has been an amazing experience. It’s been great to finally work on real-world projects, especially those focused on sustainability in the built environment. I’ve had the opportunity to apply the knowledge I’ve gained during my studies and see how it translates into practice. The projects are dynamic and challenging, which has kept me engaged and excited to learn more.

What's been the most rewarding aspect of finally working in your field?

The most rewarding aspect has been seeing the direct impact of my work on sustainability efforts. Knowing that I’m contributing to projects that aim to reduce the environmental impact of buildings and promote greener solutions is truly fulfilling. It’s also been incredibly satisfying to be part of a team that shares the same values and goals, which makes the work feel even more meaningful.

Have there been any surprising challenges in transitioning from job seeking to working?

The biggest challenge was adjusting to the pace and responsibilities of the job. During my job search, I had more time to reflect and plan, but once the internship began, things moved quickly. Luckily, I’m a quick learner, and with the support of my amazing supervisors, I was able to adapt fast. They provided guidance and encouragement, which made the transition much smoother. While it was overwhelming at first, I quickly gained confidence in my role and started feeling comfortable with the responsibilities.

How has your international background brought value to your role?

Coming from a different background has given me a fresh perspective on problem-solving and an adaptable mindset. My experience in different work environments has helped me approach tasks with curiosity and a willingness to learn. Since sustainability is a global challenge, having an international perspective allows me to consider different approaches and best practices from around the world. It also helps in collaborating with diverse teams, as I’m used to working with people from different cultures and viewpoints.

What's been your proudest moment in your internship so far?

My proudest moment so far has been getting comfortable with my role and seeing the impact of my work. Right now, I’m focused on data filtering, and while it might seem like a small step, it’s a crucial part of the bigger picture. Knowing that my work is helping lay the groundwork for future data analysis and benchmark setting keeps me motivated. It’s exciting to think that as I gain more experience, I’ll be able to contribute even more to sustainability efforts in a meaningful way.

Advice for Others

What advice would you give to other international job seekers who are still in that searching phase?

I’m no one to give definitive advice on the matter, but from my experience as a job seeker for three years in Finland, I’ve learned that persistence and adaptability are key. Job searching as an international professional comes with its own set of challenges, but every setback is a lesson. Focus on improving your skills, expanding your network, and refining your approach based on feedback. And most importantly, keep working towards your own goal—don’t lose sight of it, even when life gets in the way. The right opportunity will come when everything aligns.

Are there resources or approaches you wish you'd known about earlier in your journey?

I wish I had known earlier how important it is to actively engage on LinkedIn—not just applying for jobs but actually connecting with people in my field. Also, communities like Herizon, Spouse Program, International House Helsinki, and Espoo Talent Bootcamps, as well as hackathons happening all over Finland, are invaluable. They help with networking, provide insights into what’s expected in the job market, and open doors to opportunities you might not have found otherwise.

If you’re a student, make the most of it! You get access to job fairs where companies specific to your field come to recruit, which isn’t always an option once you’re outside the university system. Network with student clubs, participate in events, and take advantage of free CV coaching and LinkedIn upgrading courses—these resources can be quite expensive elsewhere, but as a student, you often get them for free.

How important do you think networking events and company visits are in the Finnish job market?

Networking events and company visits are incredibly important in the Finnish job market. Many job opportunities do not always make it to public job boards, and companies often prefer to hire someone they have met or have been recommended. Attending these events helps you understand the work culture, meet industry professionals, and make connections that can lead to job opportunities in the future.

If the hiring team has met you beforehand in a setting outside of a formal job application, like a company visit, it makes it much easier to approach them later when an opportunity arises. They already have a sense of who you are, your interests, and your enthusiasm for the field, which can make a big difference in a competitive job market.

Another thing I have noticed is that if you are applying to companies with a good work environment, people usually want to help you. Many of them have struggled with job searching at some point, maybe not in the exact same way, but they understand how tough it can be. If you show genuine interest and engage with the community, there is a good chance that someone will share advice, recommend you, or even help you find the right opportunity.

What would you say to someone who's feeling discouraged after months or years of searching?

I don’t want to sound preachy, and it's definitely not my place to give wisdom to anyone, but I truly understand how discouraging it can be after months or even years of searching. It can feel like things aren’t moving forward, but every job search is a learning process. People might give you lots of advice, but ultimately, only you can figure out what works best for you.

I’ve been through it too. I spent two and a half years as an unemployed jobseeker, and later, as a student, I found that all the lessons I learned from that time helped me when applying for jobs and internships. The rejections, the revisions—they all played a part in getting me where I am today.

I might have to go through this process again, but one thing I’ve realized is that getting frustrated or depressed over things we can’t control makes no sense. Job searching is tough, but it builds resilience. Just keep going. Things may come a little later than you expect, but they will come. Trust yourself through it.

How can job seekers make the most of communities like Herizon?

Active members of Herizon are working hard to create opportunities for job seekers like us, and we should really make the most of it. They’re putting in a lot of effort to organize events, share resources, and connect people with industry professionals. By participating in the events you’re interested in, you can gain valuable insights, expand your network, and even find new opportunities.

I personally have to give a lot of credit to Herizon for organizing the company visit to One Click LCA. It was a great chance to meet people from the company and make valuable contacts, which has already paid off. So, when Herizon organizes events, don’t hesitate to get involved. You never know what connections you’ll make or what opportunities might come from it.
